The Last Knit, premiered at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, restaged and funded by the British Arts Council at Yorkshire Dance, caused attention by the Maria Abramovic Institut (MAI, http://www.mai-hudson.org/about-mai/) 7 hours...7 performers...7 songs, lots of knitting and un- raveling of that knitting. A red dress, and then red thread everywhere. Stories about one -celled animals. Talking about time, life& death. Lies that don´t have legs. Apples. Peeling apples. Putting apples into little jars and thinking....
Coming towards the end of her studies in the third year, part of the curriculum was to work on an independent project. In March 2014 year she presented her work “The Last Knit”, a durational performance of 7 hours performed by 7 performers, working with movement and voice, a knitted dress, plenty of thoughts, ideas, senses and wonders….The piece is calming and stimulating at the same time. It gives the chance to take time out from the daily routine for opening up all senses and directing the focus to the simple, but most essential things in everyone’s life. The prospector will explore the passing of the time by seeing an unravelling of a knitted dress, spread out everywhere in the room by the dancers forming a net, whilst a new dress is being knitted. This experience of the “timeless space” will be enhanced by the audience having to leave all their items, informing them about time with one of the dancers when entering the space. Whilst watching the performance they will observe the slow transformation of the room over time, giving focus not only to the performer´s action but also the traces they leave behind and how this slowly transforms the space. “The Last Knit was a unique and engaging piece of work. It was great to host the ‘original cast’ at Yorkshire Dance; there was a steady stream of audience throughout the day. It was nice that the work seeped out in to the building with a piece of wool leading from the foyer all the way up to the performance space. It was interesting to see the developments and the unfolding of the work throughout the day, both in the sense of seeing the knitted dress gradually being undone, the space changing but also the relationships between performers and audience. Annika is an interesting choreographer as well as being a good project manager and I look forward to seeing more from her in the future.” Yorkshire Dance (http://www.yorkshiredance.com)
